Let Us make man in our Image.
Tupos τύπος is the Greek word that means:a figure, model, type from Romans 5:14. this one of many creation passages, but on this one I want to focus in particular. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure(Tupos) of him that was to come.
What I personally believe the passage is speaking about is the creation and specifically about Genesis 1:27 where God said Let us make man in our image after our likeness and that Jesus was the image and likeness the plural pronouns used by God in creation were referring to.
It is true the verses just prior to verse 14 of Romans 5: are focusing on the humanity of Adam and of Jesus but no passage is a vacuum. The passage says a lot if we will try and understand what is being said and ask the right questions. Why would the writer if he were trinitarian go to the trouble of saying:" Adam was made in Jesus figure or type or model" and then say he was coming? Were their two Jesus's? Is that not a question that Oneness are accused of in every single debate? It seems now that Paul has taken the very stance that Oneness takes. we see it again when he focuses in on the genuine humanity of Jesus in 1st Tim. 2;5“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;”

Why did Paul not say the God Christ Jesus? Is Paul guilty of splitting up Jesus? No! Paul is focusing on the redemptive mediatorial aspect of Jesus and that is his genuine humanity.(Heb.9:15) talks a little more about it, when it says he is the mediator by the means of death. It does not mean he is not God, it means Paul does the same exact thing Oneness adherents do and focuses in on his humanity that so many neglect. There are two basic views of creation. One of the trinity doctrine where God is three persons and one of those three persons is the son and that is why Jesus is creator and that those three persons are one God.
The other view is the oneness view and that when God said Let us make man in our image after our likeness that God was including the coming son in the incarnation just like Romans 5:14 says and harmonizes. Of course the more traditional Oneness view is that God included the Angels. I of course do not like this view because there are too many problems with that understanding that I will not go into at this time.
I will reiterate that I personally believe the passage is speaking about the creation in Genesis 1:27. God uses those plural pronouns in reference to the son of man and included the man Jesus and not another person of God in the coming incarnation just like Paul did in 1st. Tim 2:5.
This is not exhaustive by any means but it does us give a more harmonizing view of the word of God. I welcome anyone to pick it apart and email me or comment and tell me so.
